Taking matters into his own hands

Catching footballs or cutting hair, no challenge is too big for Jordy Nelson

The year was 2005. Jordy Nelson, a sophomore playing football at Kansas State University, was about to do something that would change his life forever.

He decided to cut his own hair.

He also moved from strong safety to wide receiver, proceeded to get drafted in the second round and is now one of pro football’s top ball catchers… Coincidence? We think not.

Nelson first picked up a hair clipper while attending college. As a student athlete he barely had time to sleep, let alone go to classes and football practice, study, eat and get routine haircuts.

“My college buddies and I decided one day to start cutting each other’s hair and it just became a regular routine,’” said Nelson. “Now, 10 years later, I’m hooked. It’s just so convenient. To this day, I still cut my own hair every two weeks. I even bring my Wahl clipper on road trips.”

To say Nelson is prone to taking matters into his own hands is a bit of an understatement. He grew up working on his family’s farm in Kansas—fingers to the bone kind of stuff. When the chores were done, he played sports. Today, that hands-on approach continues to define who he is on and off the field.

“I guess I’ve always been more of a hands-on kind of guy,” he added. “I still help out on the family farm, cut my own grass, snow plow my driveway and even work out without a trainer. It’s just who I am and how I was raised.”

Inside the Cut with Jordy Nelson

Cut my own hair…ha-ha! Actually, I enjoy going back home and working on the farm with my brother, playing golf and working out with my two boys. Pretty much anything that’s relaxing and takes my mind off football.
Oh geez…a lot! Golf for me is a time to get away and play. I’ve continued to get better over the last seven years. My handicap is around bogey golf, although I’m not totally sure.
I’ve picked up fishing recently. It’s something we used to do when I was a kid with my brother running down to the creek with our cane poles. Gotten back into it a little bit more now living in Wisconsin. I’ve really enjoyed going ice fishing – it’s definitely a new experience being from Kansas.
Very relaxed with the adults and chaotic with the kids! Just got home for Easter with the family, my nieces and my two boys were running around like crazy and making a lot of noise, but it was fun to watch.
Casual. Low maintenance. Relaxed.
